Women's Action Alliance is a volunteer organisation
with active representation in each State and Territory of Australia.
Our aims are twofold:
To raise the status of women in the Australian community.
To strengthen Australian families as the basis of our society.
To further these aims we encourage women to be well informed,
to analyse issues, and to participate in areas where opinions
are formed, and where decisions are made.
Enquires in regards to our organisation should be addressed to Women’s Action Alliance (Australia) Inc.

Media Release – re Present This Mother's Day
9th May 2006
A MOTHERS’ DAY GIFT THAT WILL LAST!
All Australian mothers will get a long awaited present this Mother's Day.
On the evening of the 8th August, Census night, mothers will be able to record their unpaid work for the first time.
Mrs Pauline Smit, National Secretary of Women's Action Alliance, said 'that campaigning for official recognition of unpaid work in the
Census over many years has resulted in one of the best and most longlasting gifts mothers will receive.'
'There will be four questions in total,' said Mrs Smit, 'that will address unpaid work in the home for your own family and care
and voluntary work beyond your own family.'
Women's Action Alliance has been pushing for such a question for many years, culminating in the very successful "Unpaid Work Should Count"
campaign at the last census. During that campaign, over 80,000 orange stickers were distributed to be attached to the census form, resulting in
a commitment from both the Government and the Opposition to the inclusion of questions about unpaid work in the census.
"Unpaid work should count' will cease to be a slogan and become a tangible reality this year.
'Congratulations Australian mothers' said Mrs Smit, 'your unpaid work will be officially recorded and this will be a big boost to raising
the status and visibility of your work.'
Media Release – re the Budget
9th May 2006
Women’s Action Alliance welcomes the added assistance to families in the Budget especially that extended to lower income families by raising the eligibility threshold for the maximum
amount of Family Tax Benefit (Part A) to $40.000pa.
While extending the large family supplement of $248 pa to families with 3 or more children is also welcome this amount is hardly sufficient to constitute
an incentive for couples to have a third child. Practical measures such as extending the statutory period of unpaid parental leave to three years would
be more likely to create attractive opportunities to extend one’s family.
As most carers of the disabled and the aged are women we also welcome the added $1000 pa assistance to them.
